Saturday Ride

A few of the fellas got up early to brave the cold this morning in Aliso Woods Canyon. The Mayor snapped the picture above of the crew at Dripping Cave. These were the smart guys who didn't choose to attend the bike swap meet at Serfas this morning...what a bust!

Congratulations, Lonnie!!!

Congratulations go out to the General, Lonnie Hoyle, who surpassed 1,000,000 feet ascended on GeoLadders on his ride on Friday.
Way to go, Lonnie!!!

Manny Prado Skills Clinic

I have been communicating with Manny Prado via e-mail in an effort to set up a mountain bike skills clinic for the Chupacabras. Manny has provided me with the following dates:

January 16th
January 23rd
January 30th

The clinic will be open to all with the following requirements: minimum of 4 riders and a maximum of 8. Manny limits the number of riders so that he can provide individual attention to each participant. The fee per rider will be $100, which includes a 4-6 Hour Clinic (more details and schedule to follow), lunch and a raffle for a chance to win bike products. The clinic will, most likely, be held at Aliso Woods.

If you are interested in participating, please e-mail me with the date that works best for you so we can get a head count.

1st Annual Post Thanksgiving Ride

Friday morning was the perfect day for the 1st Annual Chupacabra Cruise to Santiago Peak. A good time was had by all. The day started early at Maple Springs where the Chupacabras were met by a number of riders eager to take the cruise. A few had to turn around early, but most made it to the summit to take advantage of the spectacular views of Orange County.

Wannabe Bike Mechanic

While I was out on the trails on Saturday with Marquart and Bogart, I ran into a little trouble...first with my chain then with my front rerailleur. The end result was finishing the 2nd half of the Coto Caspers Oso loop (14 miles) on my newly converted 1 X 9 (not by choice, mind you) which was stuck in the bottom chainring.

Upon my arrival home, 1:45 minutes later than originally anticipated, I decided to attempt the unthinkable...to re-cable my front derailleur without professional assistance. I went online an found a series of videos on www.ehow.com. These videos were so helpful that I thought I'd pass the link on to the fellas. There is a guy who has posted a series of 25 videos for do-it-yourself/wannabe mountain bike mechanics. This series helps users identify and adjust the mechanical components of a mountain bike. Most of the videos are just a few minutes in length and give you just enough information to be dangerous. Here is the link: http://www.ehow.com/videos-on_2049_mechanical-parts-concepts-mountain-bikes.html. Check it out. I've also posted the link in the "Links" section on the right side of the blog.

Well, I think my re-cabling effort was successful...I rode up and down the block a couple of times and it seemed fine. We'll see how things go on Thursday.

Access to Hal's Pool Revoked...

Thanks Chupacabra Marquart for an update on the ride up to Hal's Pool. Here's a blog posting from STR dated Saturday, November 14th...

Beware: Hal's Place

FYI - I've ridden Hal's Place plenty of times in the last few years with never a problem from the local populace. That has all changed.

I met a guy named Dennis today that cordially, yet forcefully told me to pass the word that the roads up there are now off limits. He is building two homes up there and will no longer tolerate trespassers. He gave me the 411 on the owners around there and the "salt law". The salt law involves a .410 shotgun and rock salt. So be warned that he will "season" you if you ride up there.

All roads are now posted "Private Property, No trespassing".

We may want to stay away...we don't want open season on the Chupacabra.

Here's the link to the STR string --> http://www.socaltrailriders.org/forum/ride-reports/44292-beware-hals-place.html. Click for future updates.

Hammer Nutrition Testimonial...

Here's an e-mail that Jankovich asked me to share with the group. Great success story about Hammer Nutrition...

Just wanted to let you know that I took your advise and started using Hammer Nutrition products - Hammer Gel, Endurolytes, Perpetuem and Recoverite. I bought them from my local mom and pop bike shop. They give me a 10% discount and I like to give them the business.

Anyway, after using the products for a while in training, I put them to the real test last Sunday at the Silverman Triathlon in Henderson. They bill it as the toughest Ironman distance triathlon in North America because of all of the climbing - about 10,000 feet on the bike and another 2,000 or so on the run. I was hoping just to finish before the midnight cutoff. In the 4 previous years only one person in my age group (60 - 64) had finished it. So I was thinking, "If I finish, I could win." Ended up there were 3 guys in my age group.

Hammer Nutrition was one of the sponsors, so before the race I talked to the rep at their booth. He suggested using Perpetuem (1 1/2 scoops per hour) on the bike with water, and Hammer Gel and water on the run along with Endurolytes throughout. Those were the only things I consumed.

I felt good throughout and was particularly surprised how good I felt on the run.

It was a great race on pretty much a perfect day weather wise. When I started the run, I was 21 minutes behind one guy in my division. Lost most of that time in the swim and first transition. About half way through the run, a friend of mine told me I was 17 minutes behind. With about 3 miles to go, he told me I was 4 minutes behind. Couldn't quite catch the guy, and came in second by 1 minute and 10 seconds. My time was 13 hours and 32 minutes. Overall, I finished 88th out 198. Thought that was pretty good for being the second oldest person in the race.

Either the stars aligned just right for me, or the Hammer products really helped me. I tend to think it was the Hammer products.

I just wanted to thank you for your suggestions and I'll be using Hammer products from now on.

Thanks,
Jim

Manuel Prado

For those of you who have been following La Ruta, here's a bio I found on Manny:

I have been riding BMX and MTB for many years and I will always remember how I got to where I am today, the journey I took from a farm worker in Costa Rica, to top 10 in the Pro-Elite ranks in MTB in the United States.

It all began with BMX flatland which gave me a chance to escape the bad hard reality of my house and my neighborhood as well as a chance to become someone in the world of cycling. I started to train at the early age of 12 with a bike my mom got me for Christmas. After about 4 years of riding I was ready to present my tricks in competition. Shortly after a few contest I was line up with full sponsorship from the local Costa Rica GT bikes distributor, shows contest and nationals you name it, I was there. After placing 1st in Nationals for 3 consecutive years 97, 98 and 99 I knew I was ready to move onto something bigger... something closer....my dream..... competing at the highest level, The X-Games! The USA!X-Games represents the Olympic games of extreme sports and I knew that I could earn a spot of the 20 they had based on world rankings.

With $0 in my bank account, and supporting a family struggling to barely cover the basics. I knew that I had to take a bigger challenge for a better life for myself and family. In order to travel to America, I needed to save $2,000 while helping my mother provide for the family. I was informed about an opportunity to work for Del Monte with a base salary of $65.00 per week. Going from a city boy to farm worker was very tough. With a lot of determination I focused on my goal, held my head up high and repeated my newly found motto:

Life is hard, and if you want something you need to get out there and get it.

I knew better days were coming and every time I doubted myself I would picture the riders in magazines, TV and videos. This got me through some hard days working, realizing my passion.... I only became stronger. After 9 months of farming and saving every cent, I walked away with the $2,000.00 in my pocket, enough to travel to the United States and look for a sponsorship opportunity. I headed to San Francisco with nothing but a small bag of clothes and a bike. I started to ride with the locals and learn their secrets to riding. After riding and meeting the local folks, I entered competitions my first year in the USA. The level here was much better than back home and I knew I had to get better to win and earn a spot at the X-Games. I rode very hard for the following season, 3-4 even 6 hours a day, you could find me on the bike reaching for my dream.

Early 2002 I was ready to present my tricks at the prestigious Matt Hoffman C.F.B contest series. By the end of 2002 I was crowned as the best amateur in the whole of the United States. I entered my first Pro event late in 2002 I started to earn points and by mid 2003 I made it into the X-Games and earned 14th overall and top 20 in the world rankings.

A year after the X-Games my good friend Doug Andrews from www.geoladdres.com invited me to go on a MTB ride with him, I was happy to try something new and took his invite and went along for the ride. At first it was really hard to maneuver the bigger bike and I crashed several times, but after a few more rides it grew on me and I started to train on my own 2-3 times per week. Eventually, May 2004 had arrived, and I was ready to line up with the other riders at a local race. A little out of my league, it was my first time competing in this side of the sport. With nothing but my bike, BMX helmet, platform shoes, pants, t-shirt and a bead of sweat across my forehead, I was determined to do well in this race. I took off raced my heart out and could not win, but this only determined me more. I did not give up and trained even harder. Three months later during August I entered the second race.... and won. This got me pumped up and all I could think about was to compete at a race in my home town in Costa Rica witch happened to be the "toughest MTB race in the world", La Ruta de los Conquistadores 3 day Stage Race. Day one, 100km and over 15,000 feet elevation gain. I knew I had a challenge ahead of me. With each stride I could feel my muscles aching, but that only made me stronger. Suddenly 25 km into the race my rear derailleur shattered into pieces, this would not stop me, I put my bike into single speed and made it to the end with a little help from mechanics along the way. "I didn't come here to quit", I kept telling myself and finally ended the competition in the top 50 out of 400 riders. I entered this race a few more times, and I have worked harder and stronger to be in the top 5, I will keep striving until I reach number one.

After the stage race I came back to California to compete, now with more experience. I've met Sho-Air's President Scott Tedro as he was looking for help in getting fit and weight loss. We had so much in common; I gave him training tips, and went for a ride with him. Our first ride really showed his determination as well as a strong will to get healthy. We rode 8 miles, 3,000 foot fire road climb and talked about his goal of losing 50 pounds and regaining his health. We shared our dreams and Scott believed in my goals so much, the Sho Air team was born. Four years later Sho-Air has been represented in magazine articles and plenty of races. I wear the colors of Sho-Air proudly and Scott, well he has believed in me and the team. Not only did he lose the 50 pounds, during 2007 he became National Champion as well as the California State Champion. I appreciate the opportunity Scott gave me with a sponsorship.

I raced as a Semi-Pro for 3 complete seasons and after a tremendous 2007 where I was ranked as the #1 amateur in the USA I made the move to the Pro-Elite level. With the understanding of how hard I need to work and a mind-set of a Champion, I took on the challenge. I have now reached my destiny, I became a recognize name in Cross Country as well as Endurance Mountain Bike racing. With a top 8th in the premiere NORBA-NMBS series a 3rd Overall at the Leadville 100 right behind Lance Armstrong and top 5 at the best stage races in the Continent I am ready to continue to make a good name for myself as well as for those who support my dreams and goals.

La Ruta

An update on Manny Prado from Terry Best...

Chupacabras, just wanted to drop a note to tell everybody that Manuel 'Manny' Prado is currently leading in the grueling La Ruta de Los Conquistadores mountain bike stage race that crosses Costa Rica from the Pacific to Caribbean coast in 4 days. He came in 5 hours 43 minutes just ahead of 2nd place. To give you an idea of how brutal these stages are, the final packs of competitors, who are undoubtedly hardened mountain bike warriors themselves, came in around 12 hours.

Participants range from recreational mountain bikers looking to challenge themselves beyond their imagination to some of the most accomplished cyclists in the world vying for first place overall. Against a former Tour de France competitor who assisted Lance between 2001-2003 and known as the King of the Spanish Mountains (Roberto Heras), the most-successful 24 Hour Solo rider and mountain bike legend (Tinker Juarez), and a handful of UCI World Cup and Olympic Games contenders and champions, Manny is in first after the most difficult day of arguably the most challenging cycling event the world has to offer. Manny has been mountain biking since the inception of GeoLadders around 2004 - that I find truly amazing.

Fortunately today and tomorrow the mountain stages will become more technical with some slippery singletrack descents which should separate the maniac climbers from the maniac climbers who have impeccable downhill abilities.

La Ruta is the race that Manuel peaks for during the year and actually concludes his competition riding season. We're hoping to have him put on an exclusive riding clinic for us here in the next few weeks. Stay tuned...

Keep track of La Ruta events at www.adventurerace.com. Unofficial results for Stage 2 shows Manuel taking second position but holding 1st place overall by 5 or so minutes.

Things are looking good. Thanks for reading

-Terry Best

Give Blood...

Here's an exerpt from Valentino Bandito on his experience a recent EFT Chupacabra ride...

Check this out …

When I got home I noticed my jersey torn near my left shoulder and upper arm with nice blood stain (looked like a mauling from a chupacabra bite). Underneath I had a nasty gash on upper arm that I must of got when I almost dumped on the first switch back coming down Bonsai (the one with the big cactus grabbing at you on both sides).

Cleaned the wound, but it was deep looked like it needed stitches but it was a little late for trip to hospital. A little J&J surgical sealant (sterile crazy glue) and a few butter fly strips and all is well. Will carry this stuff on future long rides, works well - better than the “Rambo” technique with needle and monofilament line.

Final thoughts … If you don’t give blood on the trail, it means you are not riding hard enough.

Can you say Ronson? Way to go Bandito...Ride It Like You Stole It!!!

An Epic Valentino Bandito Ride...

A few of the gnarlier Chupacabras ventured out for (what was thought to be) a 4 hour trek through the Cleveland National Forest on Saturday. Here's the e-mail from Valentino Bandito describing the ride...

Chupacabras,

The Trabuco trail – Bell ridge trail experience was epic. It ended up over 4,500 of climbing, half of it with our bikes on our back, it gave a new meaning to hike-a-bike.

CSB (can’t see bottom) was unreal, see photo attached. I took the picture from the bottom of the abyss looking up. You can just make out Todd and Lonnie at the top trying to navigate down this cliff. Next time I do this drop, it will be with a parachute, full helmet and body armor – perhaps then I can clean it. Believe me CSB is actually a lot steeper and longer then in the picture, must lose some dimension of depth (straight down) in a 2D picture. By far the nastiest and longest drop I have ever been down.

The rest of the trail was very rideable, scenic and just flat out fun. Very remote trail, spectacular views of everything. At one point we could see Catalina Island in one direction and Lake Elsinore in the other. Felt like we were on the edge of the world. We never saw another person once we hit the Los Pinos trailhead at the top of Trabuco trailhead on main divide.

As documented on Geoladders, the Bell Ridge trail is loose, steep and nasty in spots. Fortunately none of us donated any DNA that day, but we all experienced cramping at one point in the ride, probably due to dehydration.

The 4 hour ride actually turned into 7.5 hours (we took lot’s of rest stops). We ran out of water in the end and made it as far as the Rose Cantina Bar & Grill off Plano Trabuco road. We parked our bikes, got some recovery aide (water, beer, & nachos) and called it a day.

What an outstanding day, truly an epic adventure!

Stay tuned for the next one we need to do – Santa Ana Trail.

v.bandito

Way to go Bandito. We're looking forward to the Santa Ana Trail.

Coup Training

Here it is...Maple Springs, Santiago Peak, Motorway. 25.9 miles and 4,757 feet of ascent. Counting Coup training for a few of the Chupacabras. After burning over 3,800 calories and consuming 150 ounces of water and a dozen or so Chupacabra Balls, I can honestly say that this was the gnarliest ride I've ever done...all thought up from the comfort of my air conditioned office a few days earlier...what was I thinking?

Marquart was spotted at the peak enjoying a handful of Chupacabra Balls, a favorite delicacy of those training for the Coup.

Here's a look back from Main Divide on the road up from Maple Springs to Four Corners. It looks a lot tougher than it is.

What a GREAT Weekend!

Wow! What a great weekend of riding...Saturday a few of the fellas did a little Whiting, Santiago, Luge loop. Great to see Dave out there! On Sunday, a few of the ChupaCoups did the greater Coto loop. A good time was had by all!

Get your custom CHUPACABRA socks!!!

I received the proof for custom Chupacabra socks from Sock Guy this afternoon. Check it out...

Please e-mail me if you want some socks. What you see is what you get...black socks with the beast and the sprocket. Due to the minimum quantity production amount mandated by the manufacturer - 60 pairs, I am asking interested parties to order a minimum of three pairs. Total cost should be between $20 and $25 for 3 pairs, which includes socks, tax and shipping charges. Once I have the tally of orders, I'll let each of you know the cost per order. Orders of more than three pairs are GREATLY appreciated...you can never have too many pairs of riding socks.

More Weekend Fun

Who are those good looking guys? It's the non-coup Chupacabra group out for a weekend jaunt up the Live Oak trail.

Sunday, October 4, 2009

Greetings Chupacabra fans...it has been some time since the last post. My apologies. My hopes are to keep things more up to date going forward.

What a great weekend!!! Temperatures cooled some, which allowed for a little super gnar gnar for those of us training for the Counting Coup...there's a picture of Muz high above the radar ball climbing up main divide. Over 25 miles and 4,500 feet of steep climbs...easily the hardest ride I have ever done. Good news though, 29er Jeff and Muz both made it to Maple Springs under the 4 hour cutoff time. Made it by 18 minutes. Good news as we still have 5 1/2 months to train. It was great seeing Tommy, Johnny, Stevo and Terry out there. It was also great meeting Ryan And Dave.

Chupacabra EFT - Moriarty Style

Thanks to MM for a picture of the Chupacabra Fellas from yesterday's EFT ride. Here's a little sample of what I saw while out and about yesterday in Big Sky Country.

No Chupacabra sightings so far, but there are a whole lotta bison. The locals tell me that the Chupacabra has not made it this far north yet. However, Yeti sightings have been reported...doesn't surprise me.

Sunday, August 2, 2009

Greetings from Montana. I'm enjoying a few weeks of vacation with the family.
Some of the fellas headed out to Nix over the weekend while the rest of us were out of town on vacation. Thanks to Moriarty for the picture of Joe, Lonnie, Todd, Gnarly Pete and Brad. Glad to see Pete in the mix - welcome home...for the time being.

Chupacabra Challenge Winner

M Wow, what a great morning of riding. Tommy, MM, 29er Jeff (formerly Lefty Jeff) and I hit the trail head at 6:45am. It was warm and humid, but we all made it in one piece. Cramps were abundant...I ran out of water at Modjeska Peak - thanks Jeff and Tommy for keeping me hydrated the rest of the way.

MM won the Chupacabra Challenge...Congratulations, Mike!!! Here he is with his prize...a Chupacabras MTB logo jersey.

The view was much better today than the last time we were at the summit. Here's a view of MV on the way down from Santiago Peak.

We're hoping to get more of the gang up there next time.
